Algeria: Army kills 3 Tunisian militants near border

5th Aug 2013

ALGIERS, (Xinhua): The Algerian army killed Saturday three Tunisian militants in northeastern province of Tebessa near the border with Tunisia, a security source told Xinhua on Sunday.

The three militants were intercepted by a reconnaissance unit of the Algerian army. An ambush was set by the Special Forces before the armed men were shot dead, the source said on condition of anonymity.

Ammunition, grenades and explosive belts were confiscated during the operation in Tebessa, some 580 km southeast of the capital Algiers.

On July 25, eight Tunisian soldiers were killed by militants in mountain Chaambi. Since then, the Tunisian army launched a wide scale operation to track down the perpetrators.

On Thursday, Algerian Interior Minister Daho Ould Kablia said his country has stepped up security presence on the border with Tunisia to thwart any attempt of intrusion by terrorist groups.
