Nigeria: Five killed in northern Nigeria attack

LAGOS, (Xinhua): The police in Taraba, northeastern Nigeria, have confirmed that five persons died in Kugwana in Bali local government area following an early morning attack on Tuesday by unidentified gunmen.

State police spokesperson Joseph Kwali, told reporters in Jalingo, the state capital on Tuesday that the suspected herdsmen attacked the village around 2 a.m, local time, injuring two other persons.

“Yes, we got signals of an attack by suspected herdsmen in Kugwana area of Bali local government in the early hours of Tuesday,” he added.

“Many houses were set on fire, five people were burnt beyond recognition and two others were seriously injured,” he said.

The police spokesman said the command had already deployed officers and men to the area to maintain law and order.

The Jukun, Tiv and Fulani ethnic groups in the local government area signed a peace deal on April 29 to end hostilities that had torn them apart for more than one year.

The crisis in that part of Taraba had resulted in the death of many people as well as the destruction of property.
