Nigeria: Two soldiers, civilians killed in northern Nigeria gunmen attack

KADUNA, (Xinhua): Authority of the Nigerian Army on Thursday said they lost two soldiers and unconfirmed number of civilians died when gunmen attacked Kwasakwasa village in central north Kaduna State.

A military spokesperson in the state Colonel S U. Kukasheka told Xinhua that two soldiers were killed by the gunmen.

“Yes, I can confirm to you there was an encounter between our soldiers and insurgents in Birnin Gwari in which a number of the assailants were killed. Unfortunately, we also sustained two casualties,” the military spokesperson said in a text message.

A security source told Xinhua that the soldiers had gone to comb the area for the bandits when they battle with the gunmen, adding that the three vehicles belonging to the security operatives during the incident were damaged.

He said several people fro three villages sustained varying degrees of the injuries and were taken to the Birnin Gwari General Hospital.

Police chief in charge of the state Olufemi Adenaike said he was still waiting for details from the area as at the time of filing this report.

The attacked occurred at about 6 a.m, local timeon Thursday.

Only last Saturday armed bandit struck killing four villagers in the area. Birnin Gwari which share boarder with Niger, Katsina and Zamfara states is notorious for robbery.

The incident occurred in the wake of assurance given e people of the state by the Governor, Mukhtar Yero after visiting Brnin Gwari after the Saturday attack on the villagers.

The governor had said that his administration was committed to protecting the lives and property of the people.

The state government would collaborate with Zamfara and Niger states as well as the Federal Government to address the incessant in the area, he added.

Kaduna State, located in Nigeria’s north-central region, is one of the states with recent high number of attacks in the west African country, with women and children being the most affected.
