Somalia: Four dead, 2 injured in Ethiopian military plane crash in Mogadishu airport

MOGADISHU, (Xinhua): Four people died and two others were wounded after Ethiopian military plane crash-lands at the international airport in the Somali capital Mogadishu, African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said on Friday.

The press released by AMISOM confirmed that the air crash occurred shortly before 0800hrs when the plane burst into flames upon landing, while the exact cause of the crash is yet to be established but investigations are currently underway.

AMISOM also said that four people were killed and two others were rescued from the Ethiopian Air force plane which caught fire after landing at the airport.

The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Mahamat Saleh Annadif expressed condolences to the Somali government and people of Ethiopia following the loss crew members.

According to AMISOM, the airport has no damage on the runway and is expected to resume operation shortly.

Reports said that the Ethiopian plane was carrying weapons and ammunition for the 17,000-strong African Union but the mission has not so far confirmed the claim.

Local media reports said explosions could be heard around the airport in Mogadishu after the crash. The airports remained closed to people.
