JOHANNESBURG, (Xinhua): Eight people were killed and 62 others were injured in a bus crash on Sunday night in east South Africa, local media reported.
The bus overturned, slid down the road and smashed into steel barriers, when travelling on a highway intersection in Melmoth, a small town situated in KwaZulu-Natal province, SAPA, a local news agency, said.
Eight people, including two women and six men, were found killed at the scene due to the extensive injuries, said the paramedics.
“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the barriers had pierced through the front of the bus,” said local 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.
Paramedics said most of injured passengers had been removed from the scene and driven to a nearby hospital by private transport when ambulances arrived.
The bus was believed to carry people returning from a dance ceremony which took place in Nongoma, a town about 100 km away from Melmoth.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
