Finland: Majority of Finns oppose Turkey’s EU membership

7th Jul 2013

HELSINKI, (Xinhua): A latest poll showed that nearly 70 percent of Finns oppose Turkey’s EU membership, although the country has applied for the bloc’s membership since 1987, local media reported Saturday.

The online survey was carried out by Think If Laboratories Oy of Finland during the period from Jun 26 to July 3, according to Finnish TV channel MTV3. A total of 1,760 Finns participated in the survey.

According to the survey, Finns showed different opinions towards the EU’s candidate countries. The most favored country is Iceland, with the opposition rate of less than 10 percent. However, 68 percent of the Finnish respondents are against Turkey’s EU membership.

Even though Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia are already officially the EU’s candidate countries, almost half of the respondents said they would not accept the Western Balkan countries to become EU members.

The enlargement of the European Union is the process of expanding the union through the accession of new member states. Since 1952, the EU’s membership has grown to 28 with the most recent admission of Croatia in July 1, 2013. Finland joined the EU in 1995.

Currently, official candidates include Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey. Accession negotiations are under way with Iceland and Turkey.
