Afghanistan: 4 civilians killed in southern Afghan blast

16th Jun 2013

TIRIN KOT, (Xinhua): Four civilians were killed as six others wounded Sunday morning when a roadside bomb struck a vehicle in southern Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province, said a provincial government spokesman.

“One civilian vehicle touched off an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Chora district at around 7 a.m. local time Sunday. The explosion killed four civilians and wounded six others,” spokesman Abdullah Hemat told Xinhua.

The IED was placed along the road by Taliban rebels, Hemat said, adding the injured were shifted to a hospital.

Taliban militants, who have been waging an insurgency for more than a decade, use IEDs to launch roadside bomb attacks on security forces but the lethal weapon also inflicted casualties on civilians.

The Taliban-led insurgency and conflicts claimed the lives of more than 2,800 Afghan security forces and 400 foreign soldiers while leaving 2,754 civilians dead last year in the war-hit central Asian state.
