Iraq: 10 killed, 30 wounded in attacks in across Iraq

25th Aug 2013

BAGHDAD, (Xinhua): Ten people were killed and 30 wounded in separate bombings and shootings across Iraq on Saturday, police said.

In Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala, five people were killed and 11 wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near a crowded medical center in the southern part of the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, three people were killed and 11 wounded in a roadside bomb explosion at a popular market in the town of Sadiyah, some 60 km north of Baquba, the source said.

Meanwhile, gunmen shot dead a policeman near his house in the city of Maqdadiyah, some 40 km northeast of Baquba, the source said.

In Baghdad, gunmen in a car shot dead an employee of the Sunni endowment in a drive-by shooting while he was in his car in the predominantly Sunni district of Adhamiyah, a police officer anonymously told Xinhua.

Separately, two roadside bombs detonated near a Sunni mosque during sunset prayer in Baghdad’s western district of Ghazaliyah without causing human casualty, the officer said.

Elsewhere, a bomb planted in a parked car in the central part of the city of Fallhjah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, went off and wounded three people, a local police source said.

In northern Iraq, Colonel Ibrahim al-Hamdani, police chief of the town of Hamam Alil, escaped with wounds twin roadside bomb explosions near his convoy near Mosul, which is some 400 km north of Baghdad, a local police source told Xinhua.

Four policemen were also wounded by the blasts which caused damage to two police vehicles, the source said.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in five years, which raised fears that the country is sliding back to a full- blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when the monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.
