Jeddah, (Arab News): A fire that engulfed five vehicles at a traffic signal in Jeddah’s Kilo 3 district left one dead and two with minor burns on Tuesday, authorities said.
The fire broke out at an intersection near a gas station that had just refueled its pumps, eyewitnesses said. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but witnesses said it could have been fuel leaks from gas trucks five meters away.
The occupants of the vehicles managed to escape injuries. One of the vehicles, a GMC, had one family inside and another car carried one man with his son on their way back from school.
The drivers in the other three cars ran for their safety.
Civil Defense teams succeeded in containing the fire and preventing its spread to the gas station, which was immediately shut down by the safety department.
Col. Saeed Sarhan, Civil Defense spokesman in Makkah, said: “The Civil Defense operation room in Jeddah received a report about a fire that took place at a gas and fuel station. Five Civil Defense teams, five brigades and an ambulance proceeded to the site only to find flames rising from five cars.”
He told Arab News: “According to preliminary information, petroleum on the road contributed to the break-out. The Civil Defense team isolated the gas station to prevent the fire from spreading.”
