Muslim women among most under-represented in senior UK jobs

15-03-2007

London, (IRNA):

Muslim women are among the most disadvantaged groups in Britain's labour market, suffering from higher rates of unemployment and the lowest represented in senior level jobs, a two-year investigation has found.

"Racism, sexism and anti-Muslim prejudice based on widespread stereotypes make it harder ethnic minority women to integrate in the workplace and to get promoted," the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) said in its latest report Thursday.

The EOC said that if the skills and talents of young Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Black Caribbean women were translated into better paid jobs and a wider range of organizations, it could make a "big difference to social exclusion, community cohesion and child poverty."
"Employers would also benefit by drawing from a wide pool of talent," it said in its final report on 'Moving on up? The way forward.'
The investigation found that Bangladeshi and Pakistani women suffer from the lowest rates of participation in the labour market of any group in Britain. They also faced a bigger gender pay gap than white women.

Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Black Caribbean women were also said to be more likely to be unemployed than white British women as well as continuing to suffer from being under represented in top jobs.

Responding to the report, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said the finding confirm that black and Asian women are missing from 3 out of 10 workplaces in areas with significant ethnic populations.

"It is clear that a fundamental cultural shift is needed amongst minority communities," MCB secretary general Abdul Bari said.

Bari said the shift was required mainly in workplaces and in public policy making, so that "we make better use of the skills and talents of Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Black Caribbean women."
