Pakistan: Political violence continues in city
05-06-2009
Karachi, (The News):
In yet another incidence of politically-motivated violence in the city, senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi and Shabab-e-Milli Karachi Secretary Nazir Sajid was gunned down by unidentified assailants on Thursday in Surjani Town Sector 7-D.
Forty-two-year-old Sajid, who was also the JI Gadap Town Naib Ameer, sustained five bullet wounds and died on the spot, police and eyewitnesses said.
Supervisory Police Officer (SPO) Surjani Town Jan Muhammad told The News that two gunmen riding separate motorcycles and wearing helmets targeted the deceased at his office in N. Estate Agency in Sector 7-D and fled from the spot after killing him.
“Nazir Sajid, son of Noor Muhammad, died on the spot. However, he was taken to Hazrat Hassan Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. His body was then taken to Aga Khan Hospital,” he informed.
Eyewitnesses and JI leaders said that the incident occurred when Nazir Sajid reached his estate agency, and as soon as he stepped out of his car, two or three people started firing on him with handguns. “Sajid sustained five bullet wounds in his chest, abdomen and head, and died on the spot,” an aggrieved JI worker Kamran Khan Chishti said.
JI Secretary Information (Karachi) Sarfraz Ahmed said Nazir Sajid was a former UC Nazim of Maymarabad, Gadap Town, and served as coordinator of former city Nazim Naimatullah Khan in the capacity of finance committee chairman of the then city government.
“He was a popular person in the area and was married, but had no children. Nazir Saheb escaped several attempts on his life in recent years, and being a social worker, he raised his voice against land-grabbing by influential people belonging to certain political parties,” he informed.
Soon after learning about the killing of Nazir Sajid, a large number of JI, Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) and Shabab-e-Milli activists reached Aga Khan Hospital and chanted slogans against the government as well as a political party.
SHAMIM BANO ADDS: Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Waseem Ahmed has assured the leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) that the assassins of Nazir Sajid would be arrested within a week, or else the town police officer and station house officer of Surjani Town would be suspended from their duties.
The CCPO was speaking to JI leaders outside Chief Minister (CM) House on Thursday, where a Jamaat delegation had convened to meet with the chief minister to lodge their complaint against Sajid’s assassination. However, the chief minister was not present.
The JI delegation was headed by Asadullah Bhutto, JI Karachi Ameer Mohammed Hussain Mehanti and Sarfaraz Ahmed. Rashid Rabbani, Waqar Mehdi and Saeed Ghani represented the government side.
Earlier, JI leaders and workers staged a sit-in outside CM House against Nazir Sajid’s killing, and blamed the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) for the incident.
When JI leaders and workers, carrying Nazir Sajid’s corpse, reached near CM House, LEAs personnel tried to stop them. Enraged protestors however tried to break the barricades put across the CM House, following which a clash broke out between the JI workers and LEAs personnel. Enraged activist shouted slogans against Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the MQM, and blocked the roads leading up to CM House. The police resorted to baton-charge and fired teargas shells due to which three JI workers were injured.
The situation around CM House remained tense for a while, and the entire road was blocked by LEAs personnel on the pretext of security.
