Fadlallah: ‘Lebanon now facing most dangerous period’

28-07-2009

BEIRUT, (Daily Star): Senior Shiite cleric Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah met with caretaker Public Works and Transport Minister Ghazi Aridi on Monday to discuss recent developments on the domestic and regional scenes.

“Lebanon is now facing one of the most dangerous periods” Fadlallah said, adding that “These times call for political and public dialogue in order to avoid upcoming dangers either from Zionist enemies or from international spy networks.”

Fadlallah also talked about the importance of the ongoing reconciliation efforts especially those concerning the Shiite and the Druze communities.

“The wheel of reconciliation must start turning but this should happen away from the illusion of fear created by some exterior regimes,” he said stressing on the importance of the “positive steps” Progressive Socialist party leader MP Walid Jumblatt was taking at this period.

Both Aridi and Fadlallah warned about the dangers of a religious Sunni-Shiite strife saying that all efforts should be focused on strengthening religious unity in the country.

Fadlallah blamed the obstacles facing cabinet formation on a “lack of trust between the different parties.”

“We should rebuild trust between Lebanese parties through communication or by presenting realistic proposals capable of making Lebanon a strong and just country” he added.
