13-10-2009

KHAR, Pakistan, (Dawn): A number of militants were killed when military planes shelled their hideouts in Mamond and Salarzai areas of Bajaur tribal region on Monday morning.

Local people said two planes hit several places in Damadola, Sewai, Kaga, Ghundo, Marno and Chinar areas of Mamond and Salarzai subdivisions. Ground troops also used artillery to pound militants’ positions.

A press release issued by the Frontier Corps in Peshawar said that 15 militants had been killed and 28 injured in the fresh offensive in Mamond valley.

Local people claimed that non-combatants were also killed in the air attack which destroyed several houses.

In another development, gunmen kidnapped 12 pro-government tribal elders in Wer Mamond. The armed men entered houses of the elders and whisked them away.

It is believed that the Taliban were involved in the kidnapping, but so far no group has claimed responsibility.
