Jammu & Kashmir: Geelani arrested once again to prevent addressing students
18-11-2009
By Danish Nabi
Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, India, (GK News Network):
Minutes after Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Tuesday said that triangular dialogue didn’t fit into the criteria of UN resolutions and Hurriyat constitution, he was arrested at the Government Medical College gate here where the aged leader was to address students.
Sources said Geelani was to offer afternoon prayers at GMC and later address the students. However, on a tip off, police closed the entrance of the college to restrict the entry of the veteran leader. As soon as he appeared at the gate he was taken into custody and taken away in a police vehicle.
“He has been detained in Shergari police station,” police sources said.
Earlier, addressing a press conference at his Hyderpora residence, Geelani said, “Triangular talks are not satisfying the criteria of tripartite dialogue mentioned in the UN resolutions. It is against the Hurriyat constitution also and we refuse participation in any such process.”
Maintaining his stand on dialogue, he said India must accept Kashmir as a dispute, demilitarize the region, repeal draconian laws and release prisoners. “Only after that tripartite talks must be started.”
Talks between India and Pakistan, and between Kashmiris and New Delhi over the issue had failed to yield results in the past and holding such parleys again would be an exercise in futility, Geelani said.
“All the three parties -- India, Pakistan and representatives of Kashmiris -- should sit together to find a lasting solution to the issue,” the leader said.
Responding to a question about Mirwaiz’s upcoming visit to Pakistan, Geelani refused to comment, saying, “Our own policies are clear and we don’t need to further deliberate on it.”
Asked about Pakistan’s willingness to initiate dialogue process, he said, “How can I advocate for Pakistan.”
In response to a question about his recent war of words with Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Geelani said ideological difference should not be allowed to turn into a confrontation.
Reacting sharply to his frequent arrests and house arrests, the leader said, “I am not a free man. State administration and police is misleading people by claiming I am free to go anywhere. Even our party members are being chased by the police.”
Referring to the report submitted by the commission set up by the High Court in response to contempt petition filed by him, Geelani said, “Even the commission has revealed that I am no more a free man. State has adapted fascist policies and we are not allowed to conduct peaceful programs.”
GEELANI ANNOUNCES PULWAMA PROGRAM:
Geelani announced complete shutdown in Pulwama district of South Kashmir on November 20, in the fifth phase of campaign against occupation of land by troops.
“It will be peaceful awareness program about land occupied by the troopers and also for demanding right to self-determination. We believe in complete peaceful resistance and this whole campaign will be peaceful. In this phase Pulwama will observe complete shutdown and I will try to reach there.”
ON CORRUPTION, BLACK MARKETING:
Geelani condemned black marketing by traders ahead of Eid-ul-Zuha. “Profiteering is not a virtue of Muslims and people indulged in it should desist from it. It sends wrong messages in the Muslim community outside.”
He appealed the society to celebrate Eid with austerity. “This festive season we must not forget our social responsibilities and economically poor strata of the society.”
