Jammu & Kashmir: Geelani gets bail, rearrested

20-11-2009

Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, India, (GK NEWS NETWORK):

Shortly after court Thursday granted bail to Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Shah, the veteran pro-freedom leader was sent on three-day judicial remand for ‘charging’ into Kashmir University last week.

Geelani had been arrested on Tuesday when he tried to enter Government Medical College for addressing the students. He was sent on seven-day judicial remand by the district and sessions court yesterday.

The Hurriyat (G) spokesman, Ayaz Akbar, said they sought Geelani’s bail in the court of executive magistrate, “And it was duly granted.”

He said as the Hurriyat (G) members went to the SK institute of Medical Sciences with the bail order, officials from Nigeen Police station detained him for ‘charging’ into Kashmir University.

“He has been booked, under 13-unlawful activities act, section 427, 341 and FIR no 117 has been registered against him,” they said, adding the police had brought forest magistrate with them and he sent Geelani on three days judicial remand.

He, however, apprehended that Geelani might not be released before Pulwama program of the party. Hurriyat (G) has called for strike in the South Kashmir district on November 20 even as a public rally is also scheduled on the day. He, however, said the program would stand despite Geelani’s arrest. “We strongly condemn the detention of Geelani but it won’t affect our program.”

He said the senior members had already reached Shopian, “And we expect a huge gathering there.”
