Witnesses said trouble erupted when mourners led by JKLF Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik, were prevented by police from taking out a procession in connection with 9th Muharram in Gowkadal area. “Policemen resorted to baton charge and fired numerous tear smoke canisters to quell the mourners. They (mourners) dispersed through the lanes and the by lanes of Gaw Kadal and retaliated with stones triggering clashes which also spread to the neighbouring localities, including Maisuma and Budshah Chowk,” witnesses said, adding that at least 15 persons, including three photo journalists were injured the pitched battles between the police and mourners.
Police also stopped mourners from taking out processions in Gojwara, Bohrikadal and Rajourikadal areas in the old city, triggering clashes in which at least six persons were injured.
Meanwhile, the District Magistrate, Srinagar, Meraj Ahmad Kakroo said the civil administration had put a plan to regulate the main procession on Muharram 10.
“We will be regulating the procession in the old city here which will pass through the prescribed traditional routes to reach to the Imambaras at Zadibal and Hasanabad, Rainawari,” Kakroo told Greater Kashmir.
He said the administration had made elaborate arrangements to facilitate the smooth movement of the Muharram processions in the old city. However, he was quick to add that no procession would be allowed from the uptown areas especially from Aabi Guzar.
The Inspector General of Police, Farooq Ahmad said that elaborate security arrangements had been made in all the districts.
Pertinently, at least 60 persons were wounded when police used force to disperse the Muharram processions in the city on Saturday. The authorities have not allowed the Muharram procession in the city centre since 1989.
