Times asst Editor urges British Jews to write to Cook
10-04-2003
By Justin Cohen
Totally Jewish:
The assistant editor of The Times Michael Gove has urged British Jews to write to former Commons leader Robin Cook about his decision to equate UN resolutions incumbent on Israel and Iraq.
Speaking to more than 100 Bnei Akiva members at the youth group’s Temple Fortune headquarters last week, Gove insisted those who drew moral parallels between the two middle east nations were “wilfully blind or wicked”. And he urged community members to complain on mass about the one-time foreign secretary’s recent resignation speech, in which he questioned why Britain had run out of patience with Iraq while Israel had been allowed to flout dictates for 30 years.
He said: “The UN resolutions that apply to Israel are of a different order and were drawn up under a different chapter of the United Nations. It is also the case that they don’t apply specifically to Israel. What this resolution is saying is that Israel and its neighbours, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, should engage in dialogue.
“Yet, whenever you hear talk about these resolutions, no-one ever criticises Syria for being in breach. It’s only Israel that is ever criticised for being in breach of them. A clear example of double standards is applying here.”
Gove – who was speaking as part of the movement’s weekly learning programme – told his audience they should not hesitate to contact a newspaper editor or their member of parliament in the event of anti-Israel bias. “The important thing to do is be specific in all these letters,” he said.
Gove told TJ: “In these difficult times it's incumbent on all of us in the media to recognise that balance is not the same thing as objectivity, splitting the difference between truth and lies doesn't do journalism a service"
BA Director Jonny Lipczer said: "Our members found Michael Gove's talk "informative and highly supportive of Israel.”
