MOSCOW, (Xinhua): A teacher and a policeman were killed and one more policeman injured when a teenage gunman opened fire in a Moscow public school, the Interior Ministry said Monday.

The attacker threatened a security guard with a pistol before storming a biology classroom where 10-grade students were having their class in the Moscow secondary school 263, the news TV channel reported.

The gunman, aged 15, took four students hostage while other 16 students managed to escape, said the ministry, adding that the police evacuated other students and teachers of the school with no one hurt.

The gunman’s father called his son by phone and persuaded him to lay down his arms and release the children, Anatoly Yakunin, head of Moscow City Department of the Interior Ministry, told reporters following the fatal shooting spree.

According to Yakunin, after 15-minute phone talks the father entered the classroom where he spent another half an hour. After all students were released, police detained the teenage gunman.

Yakunin said what caused the shooting was still unknown, adding that the student had been in good standing in the school.

The Russian Investigative Committee (IC) opened a criminal case on three articles of the Criminal Code, which includes hostage- taking, murder and attempted murder of law enforcement officials.

“The gunman fired at least 11 rounds before being apprehended,” IC spokesman Vladimir Markin told reporters, adding that a 28-year- old geography teacher and a policeman were killed and another policeman was gravely wounded.

Sources in the school said the suspect is 10-grader Sergey Gordeyev who was expected to get a gold medal upon graduation.

According to Russian Education Minister Dmitry Livanov, the suspect had no conflicts with other students or teachers at the school.

“Both his classmates and the class master are saying there were neither conflicts with his classmates nor with the teachers, or any other tense situation,” Livanov told reporters.

The authorities will analyze the incident so as to prevent guns from getting into schools, the minister added.

The detained suspect will undergo psychological and other inquiries, Markin said, noting that a measure of restraint will be determined for him.

President Vladimir Putin on Monday called the Moscow school shooting a tragedy and urged the authorities to “pay closer attention” to upbringing of the young generation.
