Of the victims, five are children, Md Shahjahan Munshi, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chhatak Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Thirty passengers still remain missing as they jumped into the Surma river in Pratappur area of Chhatak upazila after the trawler carrying around 70 day labourers caught fire and sank around 8:00pm yesterday, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.

Rescuers including locals, police and fire fighters retrieved 11 bodies in Batura area till 10:00am today, the OC said.

A fire originated from a stove of the river vessel and spread on the entire trawler, spreading panic among the passengers.

On information, rescuers from police and firefighting units rushed to the spot and recovered three bodies till 10:00pm yesterday.

The trawler, which left Companyganj upazila of Sylhet around 7:00pm yesterday, was heading towards Netrakona upazila.
