Jammu & Kashmir: Nine killed after taxi falls into gorge

22nd Dec 2013

SRINAGAR, Jammu & Kahmir, Indian-controlled Kashmir, (Xinhua): At least nine people were killed and two others injured after a taxi they were traveling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Sunday.

The accident took place Saturday night at mountainous Asti- Warwan area in Kishtwar district, about 150 km south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

“A Sumo taxi carrying 11 passengers skidded off the road last night at 10:30 p.m. (local time) and plunged into a deep gorge in Warwan area,” said a police spokesman. “Two people injured in the accident have been rescued and admitted in hospital, five bodies have been retrieved but four people are still untraceable.”

Police said the area where the accident took place was covered in dense fog and experiencing snowfall since Saturday evening. The snowfall made roads slippery.

The Sumo vehicle has a seating capacity of nine passengers, but for hilly areas only seven passengers are allowed.

Deadly road accidents are common in this mountainous region often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

Last year at least 1,165 people were killed and 9,755 others were injured in 6,709 road accidents in the region.
