Pakistan: Former UK MP renounces British citizen to join politics in Pakistan

LAHORE, (The News): Former Glasgow MP Mohammad Sarwar, who gave up British citizenship for political role in Pakistan, arrived at Lahore airport on Saturday morning, Geo News reported.

Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar, 60, is tipped to take on the role of governor Punjab.

He was elected as Labour MP for Glasgow Govan in 1997 and served until 2010. Mr Sarwar was also chairman of the Commons Scottish Affairs Committee.

Speaking to media at the airport, Sarwar said he was engaged in social work already and now he wanted to serve masses through politics.


He said whatever role in politics Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif assigned him, he would fulfill it. Decision to make him Punjab governor would be made by PM Nawaz, he added.


Chaudhry Sarwar further said there was a great potential in Pakistani nation and the country must get progress and development.


To a question pertaining to MQM chief Altaf Hussain, Sarwar said Scotland Yard was not influenced by anyone over this matter, adding even prime minister could not transfer constable.


He said decision of on Altaf Hussain would be made on merit.
