UK: Muslim Aid endorses ‘Education for peace’

19th Oct 2013

London, (Muslim Aid): Muslim Aid endorses the theme of International Peace Day 2013, ‘’Education for Peace’’.  Peace and education go hand in hand in Islam. The word Islam itself means peace and the very first command of Islam to mankind was “read”.  Muslim Aid, as a faith based British International charity, endeavours to enable individuals and their communities to live in harmony and peace.

A spokesperson at Muslim Aid said: ‘’Muslim Aid’s approach to relief and development is derived from the core Islamic values of compassion, justice and peace. The Charity is committed to working for peace and sustainable development. With the ongoing conflicts in different parts of the world, millions of people are becoming refugees, displaced and dispossessed.  To address conflict related adversities, Muslim Aid focuses on helping local communities achieve UN Millennium Development goals, especially in educating the most disadvantaged and deprived, by providing primary education to children affected by war, conflict and disasters’’.

Education helps in changing mindsets, bringing positive attitudes amongst people and promoting understanding, respect as well as tolerance towards humanity. Muslim Aid implements its education and education-related projects with the long-term aim of development. In 2012, Muslim Aid implemented rehabilitation programmes to help IDPs to get back on their feet in Somalia. One of the rehabilitation programmes was the primary education for those affected by wars and drought in southern Somalia. Muslim Aid also constructed 3 pre-schools for conflict returnees in Batticalao, Kurunegala and Mannar districts in Sri Lanka. Currently, Muslim Aid is implementing education projects in Myanmar for those affected by internal conflict and in Jordan for Syrian refugees.
