[Britain’s Mo Farah and Ethiopias Mohammed Aman are both shortlisted for the World Athlete of the Year award]

Mo Farah has been shortlisted for the 2013 World Athlete of the Year award, the International Association of Athletics Federations  has announced.

Farah, 30, became only the second man in history to complete an Olympic and world double-double in the distance events in August. Farah is the only Britain to make the list.

Ethiopia’s 800m champion Mohammed Aman also made the 10 man shortlist.

Aman’s candidacy is of no surprise to many. He had a stellar 2013 season; he became the first Ethiopian athlete to win the 800m gold at any major championship at the world championships, he successfully defended his 800m Diamond League title, he set a new Ethiopian National Record, the 2013 World Leading time, and became the 9th fastest runner of all-time (1:42.37).

The winner will be announced at this year’s World Athletics Gala awards in Monaco on Nov 16.

Football

FIFA vice president Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein has criticised FIFA for banning Iraq from hosting home internationals and called upon the organisation to do more for supporters in the Middle East.

Iraq hosted friendlies against Syria and Liberia earlier this year after FIFA lifted a previous ban, but it was reintroduced in July over security concerns in the war-torn country.

The 2007 Asian champions have long had to deal with the problem and hosted a majority of their 2014 World Cup qualifiers in Qatar and take on Saudi Arabia in a ‘home’ Asian Cup qualifying match in the Jordanian capital of Amman.

“Iraq should be able to host friendly matches, whether in the south or the north,” said Prince Ali.

World Cup Qualifiers: Germany secured a place at next year’s World Cup in Brazil with a game to spare by sweeping Ireland aside 3-0 in Group C qualifying on Oct. 11

Sami Khedira’s deflected shot gave the hosts a 12th-minute lead and Andre Schuerrle made it 2-0 in the second half following a fine turn.

Mesut Ozil then made sure of victory with the third goal in stoppage time as he played in an unfamiliar forward role against an Ireland side who were already effectively out of contention for a place at next year’s finals before kickoff.

Countries already qualified for World Cup: ASIA:  Australia, Iran,  Japan and Korea Republic. EUROPE: Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, England  German, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Spain and Switzerland. SOUTH AMERICA: Argentina, Brazil,  Chile,  Colombia and     Ecuador.
