Egg thrown at Muslim in hijab
By Yasser Peerbux
A woman in a hijab was hit above the eye by an egg thrown out of a car in Surrey in what police said was a racially-aggravated assault.
The incident happened when she was walking past the Children’s Centre, Church Road, Frimley, at about 9.00pm on Sunday, March 22. A light blue Peugeot 206 drove past her and horned but when she turned round one of a group of young men in the car threw the egg.
She was left with a small bump above her eye but did not need medical treatment.
Chairman of Camberley Mosque, Surrey, Abdul Mojid, told The Muslim News the attack on the woman “could happen to me tomorrow or to my wife or to my children.”
Mojid said: “I’m very upset about the attack on that woman. We are a community of Muslims in Surrey and we are very close-knit. Our community is made up of Pakistani and Bengali Muslims.”
He said his community would seek action to be taken about the matter through their local MP. He added there were many other ways they could speak out against the attack.
A spokeswoman for the East Surrey Police told The Muslim News that the attack was “classified as a racially motivated attack. We do not have a sub option of religiously motivated attack.”
