Issue 251, Friday 26 March 2010 - 10 Rabi' al-Akhar 1431 Enviroment: External agency brought in to review IPCC The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is set to be under review after receiving a series of criticism. To resolve these many errors, the UN has introduced a panel of academics, the InterAcademy Council (a separate body from the United Nations), to review the work of the IPCC. Both Ban and Chair of IPCC, Rajendra Pachauri, announced the resolution to review the agency following the critique. The Nobel Prize-winning agency was heavily condemned for its last major document, a 3000-page report on climate change released in 2007. UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, has also agreed that, “There were a very small number of errors” in this document. However, one of these “errors” was an extremely large one, claiming that the Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035. Scandals have also surrounded the agency, leading to a decline in support of climate change in the UK. Last year, hackers leaked emails from scientists based at East Anglia University, which had led to reports that these scientists had skewed information about how much man has really done to affect the climate change crisis. Following this, many studies have found that the belief in the UK has become that humans are not responsible for climate change. Siraj Datoo
